About Me

Sarah Avery-3436.jpg

I work with individuals and families managing a wide variety of issues, but am especially skilled and experienced with:

  • Couples in Crisis

  • Identifying Needs and How to Get Them Met

  • Crises and Crossroads

  • Families Managing NPD or BPD

  • Crossroads and Transitions

  • Couples Communication Skills

  • Artists of All Kinds

  • Parenting Challenges

  • Strong Personalities

  • Depression and Anxiety

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both Colorado (MFT #1062) and California (MFT #52547).  Originally from Indiana, I earned my MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara, CA and then earned my license in Marriage and Family Therapy in Colorado and California.

My personal experiences and unique challenges within my own family have helped me to better understand complex family dynamics and the importance of good communication.  Above all, I have experienced first-hand the rich benefits that can come from the therapeutic relationship, and how this foundation can help nurture all other important relationships in life.

I am intuitive, dynamic and sensitive.  I believe in people and in our ability to love and help one another.  Healthy relationships, both personal and professional, are my most valuable investments, my greatest joy and my top priority.

I am incredibly curious, kind, direct and a "straight-shooter."  I'm a good and careful listener, but I'm not timid or cautious and will be active throughout our time together.  I can help carry whatever may feel impossible, overwhelming or unbearable, and can hold hope when it feels like too much for you to hold alone.  And I don't believe therapy always needs to be a dark and tearful process - sometimes, humor can be healing, too.  And I promise you will notice how much I love what I do.

My counseling experience includes working in a variety of settings, including an adult community day treatment facility and 2 residential facilities.  For 5 years, I served as the manager and lead therapist of an outpatient program in Santa Barbara, CA, working intensively with individuals and families.

Prior to becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist, I received a BS in Theatre Performance from the University of Evansville and an MFA in Acting from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program.  I feel my experience as an actor enhances my therapeutic style and heightens my skill at connecting and communicating.

Finally, I believe that even in our darkest times, there is still a light within that is our essence and our health.  I am good at seeing and reflecting your light and your health, even in times when you may not see or feel it.   Therapy can provide a singular kind of healing connection and it's my honor to stand beside you in this way.
